6 Ways to Create a Soothing Space at Home

July 26 2021 - Life can get stressful really quickly. Whether youíre a homebody or a social butterfly, itís important to have a relaxing home base to come home to at the end of the day. When your home environment is calm and peaceful, it is a lot easier to really unwind after a rough day at work. Keep reading for tips on how to create a soothing space for yourself to decrease stress and give yourself a little peace of mind.

1. Unplug

Steadily checking your texts, emails or news feeds can make your brain feel overstimulated, and even blur the lines between your work life and home life. Social media, too, has been shown to have an addictive quality, while also increasing mental pressure and stress.†After responding to your last email of the day and uploading important data to your private cloud, turn your devices off and choose an alternative way to relax and wind down. Try taking a bath, reading a book, playing a board game or hunkering down to engage in a favorite hobby.

2. Tidy Up

Studies have shown that even small messes can contribute to feelings of overwhelm. Messes contribute to visual clutter, which can make it hard to relax amongst dirty dishes and piles of laundry.†Take some time to clean up your physical space so you have a clear area to kick back and de-stress your mental space. If you have several messes to attend to, just start small. Simply try clearing off your coffee table or picking up the floor of your bedroom. Even little changes can make a big difference.

3. Add Some Color

Color psychology is a powerful phenomenon. Certain colors are more appealing and conducive to feelings of calm, while others can leave you feeling revved up or agitated. While there are a few general rules when it comes to calming color in your space, only you can decide what to incorporate to create the environment youíd like to be in.

There is, however, strong evidence to support that including the color green in your space can naturally boost your mood. Itís a good idea, then, to add some plant life in your space. If you struggle to keep plants alive, even fake varieties have been shown to have similar benefits as the real deal.

4. Light a Candle

A relaxing atmosphere sometimes comes down to the little details. Scent is heavily tied to memories and emotions, so a comforting aroma in the room can help take you back to simpler times at home, past relaxing vacations or even act as a trigger for feelings of calm and relaxation.†When it comes to choosing a calming scent, itís a matter of individual taste. Still, scents like vanilla, lavender, jasmine, chamomile and other floral scents are common in calming aromatherapy blends.

5. Play Some Sounds

From playlists and podcasts to white noise and ambient sounds, audio is a powerful way to shift the overall tone of your space. Choose a favorite artist, an audiobook or even a guided meditation for maximum effects. Before choosing a soothing soundtrack for your space, itís important to eliminate distracting or irritating noise first. You may not be able to do anything about the noise on the street, but try adjusting your windows or using curtains to block out outside noise. Alternatively, you may want to open your windows to let natural sounds in and keep your place quiet to enjoy the outdoor ambience. Whatever your decision, choose what works best for your headspace.

6. Make It Personal

A lot of positive energy is generated while creating good memories, so the more reminders you have of good times in your life, the better youíre likely to feel. Hang up pictures of loved ones, put some favorite flowers in a vase, place a few motivational quotes or sayings on the wall or put a few favorite souvenirs from your travels out on your coffee table.

A relaxing space can do a lot for both your mental and physical health. The better you are able to unwind, the more your stress and anxiety can be reduced, and the better you will be able to handle whatever the rest of your life throws at you.
